Winds from Brunei: “Gay Sex and Women Adultery punishable with Death by Stoning”

During this week, Brunei has passed new Laws that will punish homosexual acts as well as adultery by women with a penalty with death by stoning.

Rachel Chhoa-Howard, Brunei researcher at Amnesty International said in a statement this Tuesday night, 26th of March, “Brunei must immediately halt its plans to implement these vicious punishments and revise its Penal Code in compliance with its human rights obligations. The international community must urgently condemn Brunei’s move to put these cruel penalties into practice.”

These new laws will go into action in April the 3rd and come as a process to implement Syariah Law in the country. This started back in 2014, with a plan divided in three phases that would spread out over two years. Although, the international community and the Human Rights condemned the first steps delaying the next stages, April’s implementation will be the start of the second phase.

These new laws were slowly announced on Brunei attorney general’s website on December 29, 2018. The government aims to “educate, respect and protect the legitimate rights of all individuals, society or nationality of any faiths and race” with the implementation of the Syariah Law.

“We are facing a dangerous crisis as Brunei is close to implementing laws that impose state-sponsored torture and murder of LGBTQ people,” the Human Rights Campaign Global Director, Ty Cobb, wrote to Out magazine in a statement. Several countries and public figures have already expressed their horror of these new developments and ways to boycott several hotels and travel agencies from Brunei.
