The series Supergirl introduces its first Trans Superhero

The famous superheroine Supergirl, from the CW, has presented on the newest season a reporter-in-training, Nia Nal, who has her own secret identity. Portrayed by transgender actress Nicole Maines.

By introducing television’s first transgender superhero, the CW is making history. The character’s alter ego is Dreamer. To add true visibility and representation to the role, Maines was cast, but before the role she was a young trans activist which sued her school district for discrimination after being denied access to the girl’s restroom.

The show’s writers have skilfully woven Maines’ identity as a trans woman into her backstory and origin, creating a fleshed out, intelligent, ambitions and awkward character but with a full soul to the series. Maines’ gender identity is connected to “why and how she’s inherited these powers” explains Executive Producer Jessica Queller. And like Kara, Nia will have to figure out how to come to terms with and harness her powers – although not an experience the navigation transgender folks often face when transitioning.

“If I had a trans superhero, someone who looks like me wearing a cape, [while] growing up, that would have changed the game”, Mains told the USA Today earlier this year, “ That would have been an entire new level of validation in myself, to think that I can be a superhero!”
