A World that Burns and Melts!

It’s interesting and at the same time sad to watch how the world burns and melts at same time!

Sadly, our world has become a World that Burns and Melts at the same time, as the Amazon burns and the Glaciers go extinct!

This Tuesday, 20th of August, the hashtag #PrayforAmazonia spread like the wildfire that it’s consuming the rainforest of Brazil, for the past two-three weeks! The skies above Sao Paulo turned black has the smoke from the forest fires, over miles away in the states of Amazonas and Rondonia!

Seems that these fires are part of the new trend under the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro, as the slash-and-burn techniques are used to clear the rainforest for farms and wood. This deforestation caused by these fires will have major consequences on a Global Scale!

“According to preliminary data collected by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), approximately 870 square miles of Amazonian forest was destroyed by human-made fires in July. This represents a 278-percent increase in the amount of forest destroyed during in the same period in 2018.”  Information from Inverse.com and INPE

Obviously Bolsonaro dismissed this information as “Lies” and pointing out that the INPE is working “at the service of some NGO” and over the course of his administration he has turned a blind eye for the laws that protect the rainforest and forbid deforestation by the farmers and others.

“The explosion of deforestation can be attributed both to changes in government actions, such as essentially ending inspections for illegal deforestation and firing those who are caught, and from the rhetoric from President Bolsonaro and his ministers, especially the minister of environment,” expressed Philip Fearnside, professor from Brazil’s Institute of Amazonian Research

Environmental activists and organizations have warned that if the fires consume the forest and the Amazon reaches the point of no return, instead of a rainforest that produces oxygen we will have a dry savannah no longer habitable for the wildlife and it would start emitting carbon!

On another note, on the 19th of August Iceland held the funeral for the first glacier lost to Climate Change!

Iceland has held the funeral due to the glacier in Okjökull, disappear completely to climate change.  Scientists warn that hundreds of other ice sheets from the subartic island suffer the same risk in the next 200 years.

“I hope this ceremony will be an inspiration not only to us here in Iceland but also for the rest of the world, because what we are seeing here is just one face of the climate crisis,” Katrín, Iceland’s prime minister said

The ceremony was held by 100 people, from scientists to researchers both local and from the United States. A plaque bears the inscription “A Letter to the Future. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it” can be found at the place where the glacier stood, as a warning and a way to raise awareness of the decline of glaciers.
